Bath Saracens vs Avonvale, the final preseason friendly

Bath Saracens visited Avonvale for their final warm up before the start of the league season. Numbers were far better than the previous week, and with the hosts kindly loaning a prop, both teams and the healthy crowd of spectators enjoyed a well contested match.
Sarries welcomed back a number of absentees from the previous week, and amongst the players having their first run out of the season was the familiar face of Lance Martin who was making his first appearance in a Sarries shirt for a number of years.
From the kick off the hosts were quickest out of the blocks and Sarries saw little of the ball in the opening exchanges. However as the half progressed, Sarries set plays were working well and their back line looked lively with the ball in hand. While no effort was spared by the visitors, Avonvale were fielding a side that was clearly well drilled and their young back line was quick, creative and always dangerous.  Sarries struggled to find a way through the solid defence, and the subsequent errors often resulted in turnover ball and several tries were conceded as a result.
The second half was a similar story, however it gave captain Ed Bell the opportunity to try a few players in different positions.  The Sarries tries were shared between Neil Amison, Paddy Thomas and Lance Martin. Man of the match was awarded to Jamie Navarette, while young prop Morgan Pugsley also had an excellent game.
Many thanks to Avonvale for being such good hosts, and we’d like to wish them the very best for their season!
Sarries commence their league campaign this Saturday with a home game against Swindon. The game kicks off at 3pm at the Sulis club, with the usual after match hospitality at the Hadley Arms. It would be great to see a good turn out from both players and spectators
